A part of Chilliwack since 1974

Constructed in 1974, the Cottonwood Mall was the city’s first regional shopping centre. Originally anchored by Super Value, McLeods, Sears and Zellers, it was home to 62 stores and gave area residents the opportunity for one stop shopping. Since then, there have been many renovations and expansions as the area around the mall grew into a shopping and restaurant hub in Chilliwack. A 2007 renovation included a new exterior facade, interior lighting, soft seating areas throughout the mall and new food furniture. In 2013, the mall celebrated the opening of Target Canada as one of it’s main anchors. Unfortunately, in 2015 Target Canada announced it would be closing its doors in Canada for good. Shortly after, Sears announced it was struggling in Canada’s tough retail climate, and ultimately closed their doors in 2017. While many claimed the former “Cottonwood Corners” community hub as “dead in the water”, a Vancouver based development company felt differently. In late 2017 the mall was purchased by PCI Developments, marking the beginning of a new era of development for the property. PCI committed to a 30 million dollar renovation, the largest capital investment in the malls 45 year history.

“PCI Developments is excited about the opportunity to invest in Chilliwack, one of B.C.’s fastest growing cities and economies,” said Jarvis Rouillard, PCI’s Vice President Acquisitions and Leasing in a press release issued Feb. 7. “We are a Vancouver-based company with strong roots in retail, and with our purchase, we look forward to offering Cottonwood Mall local ownership and management, as well as building relationships with current tenants, attracting new tenants, and enriching the retail experience for the community.”

PCI hit the ground running with the announcement that Save-on-Foods would be one of the Centre’s new anchor tenants, and will take up about 2/3 of the former Target footprint. They have since announced a planned opening in 2021. In March of 2020, PCI formally announced that Old Navy will also be coming to the property in Spring, 2021. With more exciting announcements still to come, we are confident Chilliwack shoppers will be able to stay in Chilliwack for all of their shopping needs. Along with with the re-development of Downtown Chilliwack and Chilliwack Mall, we are excited for Chilliwack residents to finally be able to spend their shopping dollars locally, in their own backyard.

Welcome back Chilliwack!
